Controversy trails Warri poll
•JP disowns winners
CAJETAN MMUTA,

DELTA State
Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) on Saturday announced results in the
controversial Warri councils poll with the Justice Party (JP) clinching two
seats while one went to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
However, the results would generate even
more controversy as the JP had on the eve of the election said the two winners
from their party, Chief Tonwe David for the Warri South-West council and Arthur
Diden of the Warri South council, were not their members.
Figures released to the DSIEC chairman,
retired Justice James Omo-Agege by the Returning Officers, indicated that Chief
Tonwe David of the JP polled 60,889 to clinch the seat as the chairman of Warri
South-West local government area. Michael Diden of the PDP was in Warri North
while Chief Diden, JP scored 67,459 to win the Warri South.
However, only four political parties
participated in the election which was held amid tight security.
The Ijaw of Warri South West (Gbaramutu),
Umunede people of Delta North and Abaro community had been critical of the
DSIEC’s insistence to conduct the poll on the grounds that there was no
authentic voters’ register in all the old and newly created electoral wards.
The development had forced the Delta North
people to drag DSIEC to court to restrain the commission from conducting the
election even as they contested the legality of the continued stay in office of
Justice Omo-Agege as DSIEC commission.
Besides, opposition parties alleged a plan
to adopt PDP candidates in the March 27 council polls, a development that led to
massive boycott of the elections last Thursday.
Also, the state JP chairman Chief Victor
Opia, had alleged that the PDP imposed candidates on the party.
He said Chiefs Tonwe and Diden, who have
now emerged winners in the contest were members of the PDP as they were not
known to the JP.
