    Villagers seize Shell facility

    TONY ITA ETIM, Port Harcourt

THOUSANDS of angry members of Kula community in Akuku Toru local government area of Rivers State yesterday took over four flow stations and three gas stations of oil companies operating in the area for alleged non-payment of compensation and addressing of people’s welfare.

The affected flows stations, Ekulema 1 and 2, Gbilema and Kin, belong to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Chevron and Texaco.

A spokesman for the community, Mr Ibiosya Sukubo, said that the flow and gas stations were taken over by the community to compel the oil companies and the federal government to negotiate with Kula people.

According to Sukubo, neither the oil companies nor the government had entered into any memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the community.

He alleged that for the past 46 years, Shell, Chevron and Texaco have operated in the community without any form of benefit to the people.

He lamented that 90 per cent of the youths in the area are unemployed while the community had suffered severe devastation arising from activities of these companies without any form of compensation.

Sukubo vowed that the community will not vacate the flow stations until their demands were met.

When contacted, SPDC Public Affairs Manager Mr Bobo Brown, told Daily Champion that he was not in town and would need to find out what the situation was.

When Daily Champion phoned the state commissioner of Police, Mr Slyvester Araba, the calls were diverted to voice mail of his mobile phone.

Attempts to reach the command’s public relations officer, Mrs Ireju Juliet Barusua, on the matter were unsuccessful.
