Pentascope's contract may be renewed, says minister
By Adeyemi Adepetun

MINISTER of Communications, Chief Cornelius Adebayo has stated that the country's contract with Pentascope International of Netherlands for the management of NITEL, may be reviewed and, in the process, may be extended.

The Communications Minister spoke at the weekend during his facility tour of MTN Nigeria installations at the MTN switch centre, Ojota, Lagos.

Adebayo said that due to the on-going liberalisation process in the telecommunications industry and with the commitment of Pentascope International to the Nigerian project, the firm's contract may be reviewed.

His words, "I will say that I am highly impressed with the way Pentascope has handled the management of NITEL and M-TEL, and their contract may be reviewed.

The contract awarded to Pentascope is for three years. It was, however, agreed that the contract could be reviewed if at the end of the three years, the embattled parastatals are not sufficiently made ready for privatisation.

On the facility tour, Adebanjo expressed satisfaction over what he saw at the MTN switch centre.

On the tariffs charged by service providers, the minister said: "To me, I have found out that tariff has really gone down generally within the industry since my appointment".

Adebayo said the state of readiness of the service providers to produce recharge cards locally was discovered to be inadequate in all 14-service providers who received approval for the production. "None of them has signified their readiness to begin manufacturing so, invariably they may not be able to meet the deadline date", stated the minister.

The minister, however, advised MTN Nigeria management to continue with its expansion scheme and take the services to all rural areas.

On the minister's entourage were his personal assistant, Mr. Akinloye Oyebanji, the ministry's permanent secretary and others.

Among the MTN Nigeria team that welcomed the minister were Dr. Pascal Dozie, MTN Nigeria chairman; Mr Siviso Dabengwa; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nigeria, Mr. Afam Edozie, the chief marketing and strategy officer, and other MTN staff.
