Education, Farming, Inexhaustible Wealth - Atiku
From Abel Orih Idoma in Yola, 12.05.2004
Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described education and farming as the most inexhaustible wealth in life, and therefore form the bedrock for sustenance of development of any society. Atiku, who was speaking at this year's "Farmers Day". organised by AFCOT Plc, said investment in these sectors, particularly in the northern part of the country is a challenge that must be taken with all seriousness. He said agriculture remains the most single sector that has the capacity to sustain any society, stressing that over dependent on oil at the detriment of agriculture portends a bad omen for the nation, because one day, the oil resources may be depleted, while agriculture would remain for life. Atiku also commended efforts of Governor Boni Haruna in heeding his call for governments in the North-east sub-region to support farmers and commended AFCOT Plc, for boosting crop production, stressing that he would personally direct all other governors in the region to set aside some special funds to boost cotton production, as a way of empowering their citizens. I am happy to hear today from management of AFCOT, that some states who were called upon to accept the challenge in cotton production have actually responded positively to the call, therefore, I would like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to AFCOT for the progress." In his goodwill message, Governor Boni Haruna said his administration decided to come to the aid of AFCOT because of its capacity to generate employment and boost agricultural expansion in the state, through its out-grower scheme. Also in his speech, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mallam Adamu Bello, commended AFCOT for its diversification, which has contributed positively to the policy of the Federal Government's poverty alleviation, and also serving as catalyst for development.
