Christian Pilgrims Depart for Jerusalem
From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja, 12.05.2004
First batch of Christian Pilgrims from Jigawa, Bauchi and Plateau states on Saturday night departed the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, for Jerusalem to perform the 2004 pilgrimage. At a ceremony marking the commencement of this year's pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Tanko, enjoined the pilgrims to conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors of the country. He reminded them that while government will continue to guarantee the rights of all Nigerians to practice their religions, it will no longer continue to subsidise both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages. He said while the Federal Government plans to stop sponsoring pilgrimages, it will continue to provide medical and consular support to all pilgrims and congratulated them for making the final list in their respective states after rigorous screening and warned the Pilgrims numbering 362, against abscondment. "You are expected to discharge your religious duties diligently with the fear of God in your minds and to exhibit virtues and attributes to blend with patriotism, for which Nigerians are known. "The Federal Government's stand on this is clear, unambiguous and unequivocal, and it is your responsibility to remain worthy ambassadors. Anything to the contrary would portray the country in a bad light. "Pilgrimage is not a jamboree, neither is it a picnic nor tourism, rather, it is a spiritual affair to be performed with humility, faith and diligence, and you should uphold these virtues," the minister said. Tanko reminded the Pilgrims that the Middle East is a turbulent region, and advised them to observe all security measures put in place for safety. He, however, assured that relevant authorities have put in place adequate measures, to ensure a safe and successful pilgrimage. Chairman of the CPC , Dr Timothy Ajakpo, said his Committee has done everything possible, to ensure that the Pilgrims have a successful pilgrimage.
