Shonekan Hinges Reforms' Success on Cooperation
By Louis Achi, 12.05.2004
Reviewing the current multi-sectoral reforms of the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, former interim head of government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, has said both the leaders and the led must work together to ensure success. In a chat with THISDAY, yesterday, at the 135th anniversary celebrations/luncheon of the Seminary, St. Annes School, Ibadan, held at the Lagoon Restaurant, Lagos, Shonekan said, "both leaders and followers must work together to ensure we implement the reforms programme to the letter. By this, things could become easier." Observing that reform is a continuous process whose success depends on citizens, contributing their quota, he said Nigerians are very good at identifying problems and proffering solutions, but poor at implementation. He said "reform is a continuous process. To succeed, everybody must contribute their own quota to make sure it succeeds. We are very good in identifying problems and proffering solutions, but poor in implementation." On whether he saw dangers for the polity ahead 2007 transition against the background of existing political uncertainties, Shonekan counselled that Nigerians should have faith in God and believe in the country's future. "2007 is still far off. Let us have faith in God and believe in the future of this country. Our focus now should be on how we can solve today's problems. Ordinary Nigerians should be able to have three square meals a day," he said. Shonekan appealed to those who benefitted from missionary education to give something back. According to him, "Those who had the priviledge to benefit from the quality missionary education, must give something back. We must be our brothers' keeper. Thank God government has now decided to hand over schools. "However, from all indications, the schools are not in a position yet to give the kind of quality, then, so government must continue to provide support. The old boys must also provide support," he said.
