Nigeria loses 110,000 bpd as militant youths shut 3 oil flow stations

By Hector Igbikiowubo
Monday, December 06, 2004

LAGOS—NIGER Delta youths have shut down two flowstations belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and another one owned by ChevronTexaco Nigeria Limited, and demanded to meet the authorities of both companies.

It was gathered that the SPDC operated flowstations at Ekulama 1&2 which account for 70,000 barrels of crude oil production per day were yesterday shut down by over 200 militant youths who arrived the facilities in two canoes and seven speed boats. Also yesterday, youths shut down the ChevronTexaco operated Robert Kiri flowstation which accounts for over 40,000 barrels per day of crude oil.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Don Boham, General Manager in-charge of External Affairs at SPDC, said the company had reported the matter to state authorities and that efforts were on to ensure the safety of the company’s staff in the area. He said the youths who seized the flowstations were from the Kula community in Rivers State and that the company had received no warning before the attack.

On what the company would now do, he said it was well-disposed to dialogue and looked forward to an amicable resolution of the matter within the earliest possible time.

Efforts to reach the ChevronTexaco authorities for a reaction to the development proved abortive as none of those contacted could be reached for comments.

Closures, kidnaps, seizures and threat of violence have become a recurring decimal in the Niger Delta area mostly over claims of neglect by the authorities and environmental degradation by the oil and gas exploration and production companies operating in the region.
