LGS: North gets N190.222b more than South in 5 yeras

LAGOS—Local governments in the Northern states received a total of N807.638 billion in the last five years, N190.222 billion more than those in the South that received N628.416 billion during the same period. The seven hundred and seventy four local government councils in the federation received a total of N1.409 trillion from the federation account between June 1999 and July 2004.

This excludes deductions at source from those indebted to the Federal Government. The amount represents 19.43 per cent of the total amount of N7.253 trillion paid out of the federation account to the federal, states and local governments in the federation. A break down of the net allocation to the local governments between June 1999 and July 2004, showed that local governments in Kano State got the highest with a total of N82.798 billion or about 5.87 per cent of the total net allocation to local governments in the federation. It was trailed by local governments in Lagos State with N64.063 billion or about 4.5%, and then Katsina State with N61.3215billion or about 4.3 per cent. Councils in Oyo State got N52.360 billion, while councils in Kaduna State got N51.316 billion or 3.64 per cent of the allocation.

Councils in Borno State during the period got a total of N50.878 billion. Local governments in Niger State were allocated N49.436 billion during the period, representing about 3.5 per cent of the total allocation from the federation account to councils in the country.

Councils in Akwa Ibom were next with a combined allocation of N47.277billion and followed closely by councils in Jigawa State which received N46.246 billion or 3.2 per cent of the total allocation to councils in the federation.

Councils in Rivers State on the other hand received the sum of N44.295 billion between June 1999 and July 2004. A further breakdown of the allocation showed that councils in Bauchi State were allocated N43.026 billion in the last five years while those in Benue got N43.180 billion.

In the same vein, councils in Delta, Imo and Sokoto states got N41.070 billion, N41.611billion and N41.899 billion between June 1999 and July 2004 respectively. Councils in Adamawa State got as their due from the federation account in the five year period the sum of N38.667 billion and was followed by councils in Kebbi State which altogether got a five-year allocation of N37.704 billion. Councils in Kogi State received N36.169 billion. Local councils in Ogun State were next with a total allocation of N34.311 billion in the last five years. Edo State councils were given N33.338 billion in the five-year period under consideration.
