LAGOS—The Nigerian representatives at this year’s International Junior Science Olympiad have expressed confidence that Nigeria will win the overall trophy at the end of the competition in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Speaking weekend at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos shortly before their departure, members of the Nigerian team said they have prepared well for the competition and will come back home as overall winners.
The team captained by Master Rotimi Ajigbye from DSC Technical High School Aladja includes the daughter of Equity Bank Lagos 1 Regional General Manager, Miss Adedoyin Adegboye, from Grace High School, Gbagada Lagos; Miss Tsekar Andrea from Stars International School, Ikorodu Lagos; Master Alex Anya from Dority International School, Aba Abia State and Master Olumide Ibediji from Hallmark Secondary School Ondo, Ondo State.
One of the two teachers who accompanied the students on the trip, Miss Linda Ugorji from Dority International School, Aba said they are proud of the students and that the team will perform extremely well as they have prepared very well. The students themselves said they will not be intimidated by the other competitors assuring that they will be worthy ambassadors of Nigeria as they will make sure Nigeria is known as one of the best countries in the world.
Still Learning, an independent international educational organisation which presents Nigerian students at international educational competitions since 2002 is presenting the Nigerian representatives to the 2004 Junior Science competition which started yesterday.
They presented Africa’s first representatives at a global Geography contest in Tampa, Florida USA in July 2003 and also presented Nigeria’s first students at the International Physics Olympiad in Pohang, South Korea.
Equity Bank is sponsoring the team to the competition to give publicity to the programme so that other kids will aspire to develop their mental and intellectual capabilities.
