OSOGBO— THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, chapter, has called on the Federal Government to set up a judicial panel to probe the recent crisis that engulfed the institution.
Addressing journalists at the university campus, on Monday, Chairman of ASUU, OAU chapter, Dr Herbert Illo, said it behoved the Federal Government to set up a judicial panel that would look at the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.
Illo, who absolved members of the union of complicity in the crisis, alleged that the leadership style of the university’s vice chancellor, Prof Roger Makanjuola, was responsible for the crisis.
He said ASUU of the university, had on several occasions, advised the v-c against engaging students in physical combats, adding that the recent crisis that witnessed the battering of the v-c could have been avoided if he had heeded security advice.
According to Illo, it was unfortunate that the university had witnessed several crises during the tenure of Makanjuola, adding that it would be wrong if the death of an undergraduate, who lost his life during the crisis, was not probed.
The chairman said, “ It is wrong for the vice chancellor to set up a panel to probe an incident, which he was involved in. An independent judicial probe should be put in place instead. The fate of those allegedly involved in the crisis is predetermined.
“ It is wrong to say that we incited the students to riot. The students are not incapable of thinking. They see what is going on in the university and they think it could affect their future. When you talk of incitement; the action must occur immediately after the incitement. But in this case, the action resulting from the incitement occurred over 24 hours later. It is on record that the v-c also spoke with the students before the crisis.”
Commenting on the issue, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Segun Afolabi, said it had come to the notice of the authorities that some lecturers fuelled the students’ attack on Makanjuola.
