Atiku makes case for agriculture

By Umar Yusuf
Monday, December 06, 2004

YOLA: VICE President Atiku Abubakar has observed that the only option left to Nigeria and Nigerians in the face of the present global oil glut is to invest heavily in the agricultural sector.

He made the observation Saturday in Ngurore, Adamawa state at 2004 Farmers day celebrations of African Cottons Ltd, AFCOTT.

The vice president described agriculture and education as the best sector any responsible government and individual should invest in and challenged Nigerians to make the best use of the abundant resources at their disposal to improve the two sectors.

He expressed regret that his earlier call on governors in the North East sub-region to embark on aggressive cotton production has not been heeded to.

"I will be compelled to give you (North East governors) written directives on this production if I go back to Abuja", the V.P. warned.

Atiku Abubakar maintained that before the discovery of oil, cotton, coffee, groundnut, cocoa among others were Nigeria's export earners, regretting that oil has relegated them to the background.

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Bello reiterated the determination of the Federal Government to embark on positive agricultural policies to increase food production.

He identified food preservation as one of the major problems militating against food production in the country and pledged his Ministry’s readiness to address the issue.

Alhaji Adamu Bello praised AFCOTT Nigeria Ltd for surviving all this despite all odds.

Governor Boni Haruna of Adamawa State made a donation of N50 million to the Company towards improving its cotton production drive.
