Kano bids hosting of 2005 National Quranic competition

From SALISU BASO, Birnin Kebbi

KANO state government has presented its bid to host next years 20th National Quranic Recitation Competition.

The state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau announced the governments intention at the opening of the 19th National Quranic Recitation Competition held at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi state last Friday.

He pointed out that the decision might not be unconnected with his administrations determination to improve the standard of Islamic education as well as the desire to serve Islam in that direction.

Malam Shekarau who stressed the importance of learning and teaching the holy Quran, reiterated his resolve to render necessary support through encouraging Quranic memorizers.

The governor observed that the competition had encouraged many young people to learn Quranic recitation and meaning as taught by Prophet Muhammad (SAW), calling on the competitors not to think of winning prizes only, rather, they should practice the Quranic teachings.

He congratulated Kebbi state governor, Alhaji Adamu Aliero for hosting this years competition.

In his speech earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, Prof. Tijjani Bande had said that the university has initiated the competition nineteen years ago with the view to encouraging the learning and teaching the glorious book and since then, the competition has recorded tremendous success.

Prof. Bande called on the state governments to put more effort to promoting teaching and learning in Islamic education in their states.

He disclosed that past results of the competition indicated that Kano, Borno and Plateau states have been leading the pack followed by Kebbi, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi and Bauchi states.

About 32 states are taking part in the 10-day competition in five categories, including 60 Hizbs with Tafseer and Tajweed, 60 Hizbs recitation, 40 hizbs, 20 Hizbs and 10 Hizbs while other Hizbs are optional.
