Still on how not to go to Umrah

The above mentioned write-up which appeared on page 40 of the Daily Trust newspaper Monday, November 15, 2004 has attracted the attention of the Zamfar state government. The governm-ent would infact not have re-acted if the write -up was from some” innocuous writer and not from the Chief Executive of the Media Trust Nigeria Limited Malam Kabiru A. Yusuf.
Our response is basically because of the picture Malam Kabiru painted of his correspondent in Gusau and I quote, “He is not the best educated or the most rigorous; infact he looks and speaks well, like a school teacher from Maradun. Successive news editors from the Weekly to the Daily have complained about his copy, (story) which can be difficult to decipher. For many years we kept him at arms-length as a stringer, half-hoping that some local government chairman would employ him as a special assistant.
With this characterization of his ambassador coming from the “horse mouth” so to say, why should the Media Trust believe such a reporter? As for the said report which formed the bedrock for Malam Kabiru’s Monday Column, it was absolutely false. To start with, the Zamtara state Deputy-Governor, Alhaji Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi Dallatun Zamfara was in his office in Gusau.
He did not travel an inch outside Gusau even in his capacity as the Acting Governor. For the avoidance of doubt, the Deputy Governor was at the Eid praying ground on the Sallah day. It was also he who presented the Eid-el-Fitr message to the people of Zamfara state. All these have been recorded either on video or audio cassettes. These can be verified.
Similarly, there are about 15 members of the state Executive Council made up of Commissioners and Special Advisers who have not travelled to anywhere. Added to this, the state Executive Council has been holding its meetings unfailingly every Wednesday of the week. This would not have been possible if Salisu Zakari Maradun’s report is correct!!
The Zamfara State government hereby urges Media Trust to please, uphold the true professional ethics of journalism without malice, ill will or affection.
Alh. Ibrahim Danmaliki G/Goga Hon. Commissioner of Information Zamfara state.
