If the definition of a native is some one born in a place, what then is the definition of an indigene? The definition of a native transcend just any person born in a place but also naturally belonging to a particular language and culture of that environment. You can not for instance belong to Hausa ethnic group and culture at the same time claim to be an indigene of Port-Harcourt, Calabar, Enugu, Ibadan, Warri etc on account of place of birth. Just as in the same vain, you can not belong to Igbo ethnic group and culture at the same time claim to be an indigene of Brono, Kano, Sokoto, Zaria etc. The word n indigenene is not Birom, Tarok, Gbagyi, Igala, Kadara, Zuru, Angas, Tiv, mada, Bassa, Bachama etc creation; it is an English word that locates where a particular group of people with the same historical heritage, culture, language etc can be found. The moment you identify yourself to a particular ethnic group, it is easy to locate which part of the country you come from. The Northern Peace Conference scheduled for December 2004 in Kaduna may not achieve its purpose if representatives of the over one hundred ethnic groups in the North are not represented.
