I'll contest for presidency again, says Buhari
From Adamu Abuh, Kano
GOING by the assertions of presidential candidate of the opposition All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), Maj.- Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), those who think that he will drop his presidential ambition by 2007 should have a rethink.
Speaking in a phone-in radio programme, he also criticised President Olusegun Obasanjo over the Federal Government's inability to revive the nation's comatose refineries.
Buhari stated his resolve to remain in partisan politics, noting that he would not be intimidated to drop his aspiration for the presidency through undemocratic means.
He said: "I am in politics and I will not leave it and I am still a member of the ANPP and I will not dump the party for anybody. Anybody that wants to contest against me either in ANPP or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any other party is welcomed."
Buhari continued: "If there are primaries within the ANPP and whoever comes up, wins, it's okay by me but if I win, it's okay too and I will continue to re-contest."
The former military ruler from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985, who enjoys a large followership in Kano, spoke in response to a caller's question as to whether on-going intrigues within the ANPP could frustrate him out of the party or make him drop his presidential bid.
He said it would augur well for the ANPP if those in various leadership positions avoid dictating the way it should be run.
Buhari, who spoke on sundry issues of national interest, stressed that the ANPP could be strengthened if supporters of the party from the grassroots were allowed to participate in the running of the party.
He maintained that the last presidential poll in which incumbent President Obasanjo of the PDP was declared winner was not a reflection of the wishes of Nigerians. Buhari said that he would continue to challenge the outcome of the election legally even if the Federal Court of Appeal decides in favour of the President.
Commenting on the incessant increases in the prices of petroleum products, he blamed the Federal Government for its inability to repair the refineries.
He alleged that the comatose state of the refineries was a deliberate ploy to perpetuate the importation of petroleum products by the president's cronies, noting the development was worsening the plight of the masses.
Faulting the yardstick for the pricing of imported petroleum products in the local market, Buhari remarked that Obasanjo literally swallowed his words over criticisms of the importation of petroleum products by past regimes.
