'Why Presidency Is Jittery over Govs’ Meeting'
From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan, 12.07.2004
Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Yobe State yesterday in Ibadan said President Olusegun Obasanjo thwarted the recent Northern Peace conference held in Kaduna "because of the fear of the unknown." Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State had earlier last week spoken in the same vein when he accused Obasanjo of stopping Vice President Atiku Abubakar and all ministers of Northern origin from attending the Kaduna conference. The presidency has, however, denied this. Ibrahim told newmen that the conference was not meant to destroy the unity of Nigeria. According to him, "there is nothing secret about the meeting. It is a family affair organised to rub minds together. It is has nothing to do with endangering the security of Nigeria, we have no hidden agenda." "Presidency tried to stop the meeting for fear of the unknown. They tried everything to cajole people not to attend but failed." "What fear are they nursing? We have no hidden agenda, nothing sinister about our motive. We are only concerned about the peace and unity of the North and Nigeria as a whole," he said. According to Ibrahim, the presidency shouldn't have stopped some people like ministers from attending the meeting. "We did not miss anybody although the absence of Vice President Atiku Abubakar created a little gap, but then he sent his representatives," he said. Ibrahim who was accompanied to the forum by former governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said the peace conference provided avenue for "sincere, and frank talks aimed at moving the north and Nigeria forward." "The forum was organised as a way of further cementing national unity. There was nothing wrong with any such form of association aimed at finding solution to Nigeria's problems," he said. While calling for unity among Nigerians, the governor added that "once there is justice and equity there will definitely be peace and progress." The presidency in a reaction to the accusation by the governors over the Kaduna conference, described Turaki's utterance as "misguided and unfortunate political sophistry."
