LAGOS
command of the Federal Fire Service is on the brink of "total
collapse" unless it raises N500,000 to repair all its broken-down
equipment.
In a statement yesterday, the
command stated that repair of the fire appliances was necessary to enable it
perform effectively especially with the commencement of harmattan which is
usually associated with various fire hazards.
The statement signed by the
command spokesman Mr. Elechi Collins, said the assistance of the stakeholders to
the command would go a long way as it has not been given any running grant by
government since the beginning of this year.
"Our fire appliances
covering most of the zones within Lagos metropolis have all broken down and we
make bold to say that since the year started, we have not been given a kobo for
the running of the command.
"The zones and stations
which fire engines mostly affected are, Awolowo and 1004 fire stations. These
stations cover Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, etc. The other stations are Festac
and Ebute-Metta both cover Festac town, Trade Fair and Badagry community. While
Ebute-Metta covers the Mainland and Apapa Wharf zone," the command further
stated.
Giving the break down of the
amount of money each station requires, the statement said, "Awolowo fire
station, N98,000; 1004 fire station, N57,300; Festac station; N126,000;
Ebute-Metta, N89,000; and Apapa fire station, N82,600."
The above stations are not
currently functioning. In view of heavy investments in these areas, we are
appealing to corporate organisations and well-spirited Nigerians to come to our
aid by taking upon themselves the repair of one or more of these appliances to
enable us protect investments too numerous to account in the affected areas.
"This clarion call becomes
necessary and timely hence the period we are into, is that of harmattan,
associated with various degrees of fire hazards.
"Therefore, it will serve both interest if
stakeholders take up the repair of these broken down fire engines and put them
into effective functional state to give adequate fire coverage to the above
mentioned zones and stations to avoid fire disasters and make Christmas season
fire incident free," the command added.
