FG to check influx of expatriates into oil and gas industry

    SOPURUCHI ONWUKA

FEDERAL Government has initiated measures to check influx of expatriates to assume positions in the nation’s oil and gas industry where there are qualified Nigerians for the same jobs.

Also the National Assembly is harmonising all existing environmental laws, so as to avoid conflict of roles among institutions of government with overlapping environmental functions.

These disclosures were made in Port Harcourt yesterday at 2004 international biennial conference of the Nigerian oil and gas industry on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE).

The conference also provided a forum where oil and gas industry stakeholders called for alternative resolution to community issues in the country instead of the conventional court actions.

In a paper presented on his behalf at the conference, the Director, Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DRP) Mr. Mac Ofurhie, said the move to check influx of expatriates into the country was a presidential directive in line with the local content improvement campaign in the oil and gas sector.

The speech which was delivered by Mr. Dozie Ilechukwu of the DPR, outlined the role of the directorate as the technical regulator of the industry, stressing that HSE regulations were being reviewed to match latest industry technology while closely monitoring downstream operations.
