Canoe mishap kills 5 in Jigawa From Hassan A. Karofi, in Dutse A canoe carrying 19 female children, traveling between Aguba village in Miga Local Government Area of Jigawa State, capsized drowing five of the occupants, while 14 were rescued. According to eyewitness accounts, the canoe capsized after the girls panicked midway forcing the canoe to lose control and thus capsizing. The eyewitness at the scene of the accident told Daily Trust that the cry for help by the girls attracted nearby divers who tried to rescue the capsizing canoe. Malam Nata’ala revealed that professional divers immediately mobilized themselves to rescue the remaining girls. Due to the strength of the river current however, the divers could not immediately rescue all the girls, leading to the death of five of the canoe occupants. While confirming the incident, state police commissioner, Saleh Abubakar Ningi said only three of the dead children who were aged between 7-19 were recovered, while the remaining are still missing. He added that 14 of the girls were rescued and are recuperating with their families. He disclosed that the canoe owner has been detained for questioning as investigations revealed that he has no license to operate. The 19 girls were traveling to their farms when the canoe capsized after the stormy water caused panic amongst the children, leading to stampede. Canoe mishap is new in the area and it follows environmental hazards leading to thousands of kilometers being overtaken by water and typhus grass forcing residents to use canoes to cross to their farmlands.
