State of the refineries: Oil workers want TAM contractors exposed From Samson Ojo, in Lagos Workers in the oil and gas sector of the economy have vowed to compel the federal government to implement the outcome of the current probe by the National Assembly of all companies handling the turn around maintenance (TAM) of all the refineries in the country. The workers, under the aegis of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have in a joint statement threatened to employ all mean to tackle the government. In the statement, jointly signed by both presidents of the unions, Comrade Peter Akpatason and Dr. Brown Ogbeifun respectively, the workers threatened to compel the government to expose all contractors handling the TAM of all the four refineries. The unions in the three-page statement asked the government to address all issues hindering the effective performance of the oil and gas sector in the country. While wondering why the sector which accounts for 90 percent of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings cannot operate without hitches, they said that though the government blamed the delay in the operations of the refineries on alledge vandalisation of the crude line supplying Kaduna and Warri refineries with products, they wondered why nothing has been done to date to improve the situation at the plants.
