Atiku, Tinubu, others extol Hamzat's virtues at book launch
By Anson Ekechi Chukwu
FOR the former Lagos State Commissioner for Finance and a chieftain of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Alhaji Olatunji Hamzat, yesterday was a day of glory as prominent Nigerians took turn to pour encomiums on him for his outstanding service to humanity.
The tributes on Hamzat were showered in Lagos at the public presentation of his book entitled: The Reflections of a Public Man.
The event, which attracted distinguished Nigerians including politicians, captains of industries, scholars and businessmen, became a reunion of sorts.
Speaking at the event, chairman of the occasion, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, represented by the chairman, Privatisation Committee, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun, praised Hamzat for his selflessness and commitment to unity in the country.
At the turn of Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu to speak on Hamzat, he did so most passionately and told the large audience that the foremost politician remained a source of inspiration to him.
However, Tinubu, who was on the high table, had to break protocols and personally walked down the corridors to usher in his octogenarian mother, Alhaja Abibatu Magaji, amid thunderous applause.
Tinubu, who was the guest of honour, attributed his political success not only to God but to the great fatherly guidance of the author.
He said Hamzat's kind-heartedness, political strategy, wisdom and tactics and positive attitude towards all things have been the secret behind his success in politics.
He described the author as a consistent leader, dependable, fearless, honest, independent minded and a veritable developer of other leaders.
"He is a leader who believes in positive revolution, fairness and justice. He has sacrificed his life so much in developing democratic institutions. He is a true democrat," Tinubu added.
He said that Hamzat and former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, shared a common identity of service and were impartial umpires as well as his political mentors.
In her comment, a member of the House of Representatives, Abike Dabiri, said: "Well am not surprised that this presentation has witnessed a huge turnout and one thing you have to appreciate about the man is his broadmindedness and zeal to help. When I went into politics not too long ago, I relied a lot on his advice and support. And despite the fact that I was new, he showed understanding and guided me. And you can see from all I have heard about him, he is really a father figure."`
