Outage stalls Imo Assembly's second reading of budget
From Charles Ogugbuaja, Owerri

EFFORTS to give accelerated second reading to the N35.7 billion budget proposal presented last week to the Imo State House of Assembly by Governor Achike Udenwa suffered a setback yesterday as power supply to the Chambers went off.

After waiting for more than 30 minutes for the restoration of power, the 17 legislators present unanimously decided to "call it a day". They then adjourned till today.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Kelechi Nwagwu, worried by the long outage and the legislators' call for candles to continue the proceedings, had no option than to accept the motion for adjournment.

The House's gigantic power generating set, according to the Clerk and the Assembly's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emma Ibekwe, had broken down and was under repairs.

The Guardian gathered that the legislators present were sad over the development as they had planned to give the budget, after necessary hearing, approval and passage before Christmas.

Also at the sitting were the Deputy Speaker of the House, Dr. Chuma Nnaji and the Majority Leader, Dan Nwagwu.

The Guardian gathered that the House, which receives about N10 million monthly as imprest, was allegedly having problems in maintaining its equipment and necessary items in offices.

Besides the computer attached to the office of the Deputy Clerk of the House, almost all others in the Assembly complex are faulty.
