Ibadan customers owe NEPA N14.3b

THE management of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) yesterday disclosed that customers in Ibadan zone owed the organisation the sum of N14.3 billion.

The zone, which comprises four states, namely: Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, according to the Chief Operating Officer of NEPA, Mr. Ayo Obilomo, had "refused to pay their bills," thereby failing to reciprocate the organisation's gesture of providing better services.

According to the NEPA boss who spoke at the zonal customers consultative council meeting held at the Kakanfo Inn, Ibadan, failure by customers to promptly settle their bills was one of the problems militating against the attainment of the organisation's targets of providing uninterrupted power supply.

He said: "The huge outstanding debt owed by NEPA customers as unpaid electricity dues is a major constraint. Customers need to appreciate that unpaid bills are affecting the authority's capability to meet its obligations them."
Obilomo urged customers to give priority to the settlement of bills, saying disconnection for non-payment is a last resort.

Of the N14.3 billion owed the authority, Obilomo said private, residential and commercial customers accounted for more than 90 per cent.

While soliciting the co-operation of customers through the prompt payment of their debts to enhance NEPA's performance and service delivery, Obilomo enjoined customers to realise that the organisation depended on revenue from sales of electricity to run its operations.

"The authority cannot fold its arms and watch customers accumulate unpaid bills. Therefore, we shall continue to encourage them to pay and when they fail, we shall be left with no option than to disconnect electricity supply to their premises," Obilomo said.

He also disclosed that plans were on to re-examine the status of the organisation's debtors with a view to giving them some incentives to liquidate such debts.

Although Obilomo noted that the cases of vandalisation had diminished due to the co-operation from law enforcement agencies, he however called on customers to be more vigilant in the protection of NEPA equipment to ensure better services.
