China to provide 598 boreholes in 18 states
From Tsokar Karls, Abuja

TO complement government's efforts at providing potable water to Nigerians, the Chinese government is to provide about 598 boreholes in 18 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

While making the announcement to the Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Muhktari Shagari, the leader of a team of Chinese engineers, Mr. Dai Genbao, said his delegation is currently conducting a reconnaissance survey of the 18 states and the FCT as a prelude to the commencement of the water project.

Genbao said the gesture is in response to the recent visit of the minister to China where he explained the plight of rural dwellers in Nigeria who are in need of potable water and the Federal Government's determination to tackle the problem through the Presidential Water Initiative Programme.

In his response, Shagari, on behalf of the Federal Government, thanked the Chinese government for the gesture. He pointed out that it was part of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed recently between the Federal Government and the Chinese government to boost water supply in Nigeria.

The minister assured Nigerians of the Federal Government's resolve to make potable water available to about 80 per cent of the people by the year 2007 and now, 60 per cent of Nigerians have access to potable water nationwide.

The boreholes are to be sited in 10 local councils of each of the selected states as well as four in the FCT namely Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada and Kuje.

The beneficiary states are Benue, Kogi and Niger in the North-Central; Adamawa, Borno and Taraba in the North-East zone; Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti from South-West zone; Anambra, Imo and Enugu from the South-East; Sokoto, Kaduna and Kano from the North-West zone; and Akwa Ibom, Delta and Rivers in the South-South geo-political zone of the country.`
