Anambra State: A call to prayer
SIR: We have observed with utter dismay the deplorable situation in our dear state, Anambra in the past few weeks. We have watched with great shock the wanton destruction of the totally insufficient structures and infrastructure in our state, Anambra.
We have watched the display of arrogance of power, abuse of wealth, positions and circumstantial advantages. Whatever could be the provocations, whatever could be their reasons of claims, nothing can justify the destruction of the patrimony which we inherited from our forefathers. We pray God to forgive the perpetrators of these crimes.
In the spirit of reparation, repentance and atonement, we call on all Nigerians of goodwill especially of Anambra origin to pray for the state. Effective prayer goes with penance, mortification and almsgiving, bearing in mind the words of the Lord who says "if they pray to me and repent and turn away from the evil they have been doing, then I will hear them in heaven, forgive their sins, and make their land prosperous again. I will watch over this 'land' and be ready to hear all the prayers that are offered here, because I have chosen it and consecrated it as a place where I will be worshipped for ever". (2 Chron.7:14-16).
Christians of all denominations are hereby urged to organise their own prayers their own way. While for Catholics I recommend the following:
- That nine days (December 1-9) be set aside for intensive prayers,
fasting and penance for the welfare of the state, so that God's own peace will reign;
- That in those days the state will be specially remembered in all the Masses celebrated;
- That every evening of the said nine days, there will be Holy hour introduced with the Holy Rosary. During the exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, minutes of silent prayer will be observed. This is followed by Bible reading, prayer of the faithful and concluded with the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Magnificat will be the recessional hymn,
- That in the period of silent prayer as well as the prayer of the faithful we shall pray for the country, for Anambra State in particular for peace and God's quick intervention.
This prayer session is requested to hold in all parishes, institutions and religious houses. Families which cannot attend the public prayer sessions are earnestly requested to remember the state in their private family rosaries.
Let me thank you up front for the dedication, devotion, sincerity and faith with which you will offer your prayers to God for the present and future welfare of the state and our country. May God bless you call upon Him.
