Okoya-Thomas restates support for Asoju-Oba table tennis
  • As competition begins Dec 13

By Folake Olujimi

SPONSOR of the yearly Asoju-Oba Table Tennis Championship, Chief (DR), Molade Okoya-Thomas, has restated his commitment to the sponsorship of the event. He also said he would involve his children from this year's edition.

The renowned industrialist who was represented by his first son, Deji Okoya-Thomas, at the press conference to usher in the 36th edition of the tournament in Lagos yesterday, said he stood resolutely by his promise.

"I shall continue to sponsor the Asoju-Oba Table Tennis Cup. I stand by my word and I shall not waiver. Beginning from this year, I shall involve my children in the annual tournament," he stated.

He expressed satisfaction on the achievements of the competition in the past 36 years, adding that this year's event will be different from the previous ones.

His words: "I derived immense joy when I see the products of Asoju-Oba continue to make waves on both the local and the international sporting scenes.

"Our table tennis has conquered Africa. We have made serious impact on the Commonwealth. Let me assure you that with good and systematic planning, we shall get somewhere at the Olympics."
This year's edition of the championship will take place from December 13 to 17, at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

Players will vie for honours in three categories. They are the Cadet, Junior and Senior, while 17 titles will be at stake.

Meanwhile, Okoya-Thomsa has condemned Enyimba's 1-2 loss to the Etoile du Sahel of Tunis in the first leg of the final of the CAF Champions League played last Saturday in Tunisia.
According to him, "Enyimba Football Club of Aba, the defending champions of CAF Champions League, started the defence of their hard-won title on a rather shaky note."
He urged the club to prepare well for the second leg of the competition, scheduled for Sunday at the Abuja National Stadium.

He further advised the technical crew of the club to inpart every necessary technique in the players in other to achieve victory.
Okoya-Thomas also called on all Nigerians to support the club by cheering them to victory.
