Emulate Atiku, Hamzat, Tinubu Urges Leaders
By Shaka Momodu, 12.07.2004
Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on political leaders to imbilbe such high moral standards of integrity, transparency and commitment to the Nigerian nation as exemplified by both Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the National Vice President (South west) of Alliance for Democracy, Alhaji Olatunji Hamzat. Recalling his political experience during the public presentations of Hamzat's book "The Reflection of a Public Man", at Adebola House, Ikeja, Tinubu said by a rare combination of ability to relate to people, regardless of their political persuasion, both men have created leaders in their own rights. He recounted his recent trip to Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajji during which Atiku waited at Jeddah for him to arrive six hours later so they could travel to Mecca together and having known that he will be absent at the book launch, he had detailed a representative, even though Hamzat belong to the Alliance for Democrarcy (AD). While also attributing the success of Chief MKO Abiola at the Jos Convention of the SDP to earlier support garnered and given by General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Hamzat and others, Tinubu said by giving persons without history of politicking a chance, they have exhibited leadership qualities. Describing the author as a true democrat who sacrificed a lot for the development of democratic institutions, Tinubu said success of Primrose and Justice Forum are attributable to the flexibility of the leadership style of Hamzat. He recalled the fierce loyalty of Hamzat to his allies, saying as the present leaders of AD forge a strong bond and that the party will go stronger and have a broader outlook. Commenting on his motive for writing the book, Hamzat said, "being close to 72, I have nothing left to do but to ponder on the experience of moral life." He said the book was communion with himself and an observation of events around him, which speaks only the truth as he perceived it. The gathering, which attracted political heavy weights within the AD, was witnessed by notable personalities including; Mr. Akin Kekereekun, Chief Dapo Sarumi, Senator Tokunboh Afikuyomi, Senator Mamora, Ojomu of Ajiranland, Oba T.A. Akinloye, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, Alhaji Tajudeen Olushi and a host of others.
