Pray for Nigeria, Pilgrims Urged
From Abel Orih Idoma in Yola, 12.07.2004
Christian pilgrims from Adamawa State have been told to offer special prayers for the nation and the state in particular while in the Holy Land for their religious obligation. Gvernor, Boni Haruna, who gave the charge Monday, in a farewell message to this year's intending pilgrims to Jerusalem said, the country is passing through dark moment where the forces of evil are at work, using various means through rumour mongering and outright blackmail in order to cause confusion. While addressing the Christian pilgrims numbering 826 from Adamawa state, governor Haruna disclosed that since his assumption of office, his administration has been trying to be fair and just to the adherent of the two major religions in the state through sponsorship to enable them perform one of their religious obligations. He said government has within its limited resources, ensured that more and more citizens of the state are sponsored to the Holy Land, promising that more numbers would also be sponsored next year. The governor therefore, charged the intending pilgrims to use the opportunity for spiritual rejuvenation by not only been good ambassadors of the state, but to also pray for the nation, particularly for those in authority. He said the prayer is very necessary ìconsidering the often diabolical and dangerous designs by mischief makers who have now resorted to outright blackmail through the sponsorship of total falsehood and fabrications of all sorts and imaginable stories with the sole aim of causing confusion in the state because they are not in power". Adding that, "only yesterday, I read in a daily newspaper (not THISDAY) where I was alleged to have built so many houses in the state with public money. As I stand before youand God, I swear that I donít own those alleged houses nor do I know where exactly those houses are situated. "Although, such allegations signify the kind of price one has to pay for leadership, I am sure that no sane person would come out to say that I own those houses since my assumption of office over 5 years ago. "I am making this confession before you people and God as I stand here that I know nothing about those houses as alleged in those reports, except the only house I own on Dougirei". The governor also used the occasion to challenge well-to-do citizens, both in private and public sectors particularly Christians, to assist in the sponsorship of their Christian brothers and sisters as against the present situation where those who are in a position to sponsor themselves and others resort to cornering even the few opportunities sponsored by government. Speaking earlier, the leader of this yearís delegation to the Holy Land, Ambassador Wilberforce B. Juta, expressed gratitude to the state government for making it possible for more people to participate in this year'í Holy pilgrimage, promising that the pilgrims would not only maintain the enviable efforts of Adamawa state in the Holy Land, but would use the opportunity to pray for peace, unity and progress of the nation. The executive secretary of the Board, Rev. Amos Yohana, said of the 826 intending pilgrims, only 17 of them were self-sponsored, but however, singled out 2 members of the state executive council who sponsored a total of 54 candidates for this yearís Holy pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and called on other Christians to emulate the Godly gestures. Rev. Amos assured the intending pilgrims that the state government has made adequate provision for their welfare and security while in the Holy Land. Meanwhile, the 1st batch of the pilgrims departed Yola International Airport Monday night for the Holy Land just as the state governor Boni Haruna would likely join the 3rd batch in the Holy Land towards the end of this month.
