Dariye: 'Probe Smacks of Witch-hunting'
By Olawale Olaleye, 12.07.2004
A governorship aspirant in Abia State and a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Emmanuel Nweke, has said one of the problems associated with probing the Governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye is that such solo-probe would smack of witch-hunting because such cases abound ,,,, in the federation. Nweke who strongly supported probe into allegation of corrupt practices by any person, no matter how highly placed said the move by the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) was in order because allegation of corruption and reconciliation should not seen as mutually exclusive. Nweke said reconciliation should not be seen as condoning corruption as any such move would only undermine the nation's fledging democracy, stressing that "it is right and proper that the issue about transparency is not put on the background". But the PDP Chief explained that "the problem I have is that government should look at every state with a view to unraveling the mess there. This is because the way it happens, it looks like it suddenly happens in states where there is trouble. But if taken all over, it would show that government is serious about the corruption thing", he added. Speaking also on the crisis plaguing the petroleum sector country, Nweke noted that though government "is trying to do a good job", but has reservation on how deregulation is being conducted. He argued that unless government encourages investment in the refineries, the country may still not be able to run at full capacity. He however identified as a major worry, the inflation associated with increment in the prices of petroleum products which he noted often affect the entire system in terms of pricing at all levels. He enjoined government to proceed on the construction of refineries both on long and short term basis.
