‘Inconsistent Policies, Bane of Manufacturing Sector’
By Oghenekevwe Laba, 12.07.2004
President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chief Olusola Faleye, has faulted inconsistent policy as one of the factors inhibiting the progress of manufacturing sector in the country. Olusola, who made the accusation yesterday at the third Quarterly Business Luncheon of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce, Ikoyi, Lagos, equally laid the blame of factors inhibiting manufacturing sectors on operating cost and weak public institutions. He said while the multinational companies have been able to absorb these shocks by virtue of their size, management expertise and offshore corporate linkages, most indigenous manufacturing firms have collapsed under the burden of the unfavourable business environment. Faleye said this was why mortality rate of indigenous manufacturing companies had remained very high adding that it is gratifying that Dangote group has posted an exemplary performance despite the overwhelming odds of Nigerian business environment. "Dangote no doubt has passion for manufacturing and value added enterprises. Its activities cut across many segments of the manufacturing sector including cement, agro-allied industries and textiles among others. As an entrepreneur, he has distinguished himself as the largest indigenous conglomerate in the country", he said. Faleye noted that business luncheon was instituted by Lagos Chamber of Commerce to provide platform for distinguished personalities in the private and public sectors to address topical issues of economic and business importance adding that they are of the believe that through regular discourse of such vital issues, they could shape the direction of public policy in a manner that would enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian private sector.
