Professionals Urged To Partake in Politics
From Funso Muraina in Akure, 12.07.2004
Ondo
Professionals in all fields of human endeavours have been enjoined to take serious interest in partisan politics to improve governance. The advise was given by an Abuja-based lawyer, Prince Kayode Adetokunbo (SAN), in a chat with newsmen in Akure. He said it is unfortunate for a country that prides itself as "the giant of Africa," to be consistently governed by those he called "pseudo illiterates.β Adetokunbo said any society that is governed by people of doubtful integrity would continue to suffer the pains of inefficiency, nepotism and insensitivity to the plight of the masses. He said it was time to shift attention from "professional politicians" whose antecedent people cannot vouch for. He said there was already a shift from the old order to new order, but unfortunately, no one recognise the fundamental shift. βTo relieve the system of corruption, there should be some form of political education and re-engineering of politicians. "I want to advise professionals in all fields like medicine, law, engineering and others to show interest in politics. If we don't make move now, we will be out,β he said. According to him, a greater number of young ones had missed the opportunities in the past, leaving the saddle to "just anybody who has money." He refer to countries where young professionals call the shot in politics, saying they are very progressive nations. He regretted that Nigeria does not accommodate young minds who in the next 10 years would become adult. "It is the youths who have the mien to effect necessary changes in the polity and bring about the much desired reforms." The senior advocate advised the judiciary not to shirk its responsibility to uphold the rule of law at all times.
