Plateau AD Warns Mantu Against Destabilising Acts
From Funmi Peter-Omale, in Jos, 12.07.2004
Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Plateau State has cautioned Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu to desist from polarizing the party. The party stressed that any attempt by the senator and his cohorts to forcefully convert the AD party secretariat to a factional state office of another party would be fiercely resisted. Acting Chairman of the party, Yohanna Ajik and Public Relations Officer Chief Toye Ogunshuyi at a joint press conference in Jos said the party is not bothered by the decampment of some respected members of AD back to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). "Though to us it did not come to us as a surprise, giving their political antecedents, we make bold to state without reservations that their decision to go back to PDP only portrays them in the light of political harlots, jingoists and no good politicians. What has become of paramount interest to us is their diabolical attempt by these no do good politicians to convert our state secretariat to a factional state office of another party", he said. The party leaders noted that members are aware that the deputy senate president who is the arrow head of this move has already given the sum of N3 million to effect the use of the AD secretariat. He also condemned the deputy senate president for allegedly disbursing the sum of N1.7 million (N100,000) each to ensure that all AD structures in the 17 local government areas be converted to his factional group. While noting that the fragile peace existing in the state should not be toyed with especially as the state was just getting out of a six month emergency rule, the party leaders and their members threatened that they would be compelled to react sharply against provocation. They also expressed the need and belief that democracy in the state should be sustained at all cost, adding that the AD in the state fought spiritedly against emergency rule in liaision with the AD government in Lagos when governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu had to walk out of both chambers of the National Assembly in protest of the state of emergency.
