From MUAWUYA B. IDRIS, Katsina
THE upper legislative chamber of National
Assembly has approved additional substantial amount of money for
agricultural sector in response to complaints over the 1.7 per cent
allocated to the sector in the 2005 federal government budget.
A senator representing Katsina Central, Alhaji
Umaru Tsauri, told Daily Triumph in an exclusive interview on Sunday, that
the entire Senate had unanimously agreed to increase the amount allocated to
agricultural sector.
Senator Tsauri described the 1.7 per cent
allocated to the sector in the budget as too meager and unacceptable in view
of the importance of agriculture as the mainstay of the Nigerian economy.
Nigeria is a country where we are tying to run
away from oil to agricultural economy, we cannot compromise agriculture
because that is the vein of the lives of all citizens of a nation, he
explained.
Senator Tsauri further stressed that when the
president presented the budget and we realized that less than two per cent
was allocated to agriculture, nobody among us was comfortable, everybody was
bitter.
I dont think there is any member of the
National Assembly who supported the meager percentage allocated to
agricultural sector, he emphasized.
The Senator explained that all committees
assigned to study the budget unanimously agreed that a substantial increase
must be made to the sector.
He explained that the budget would soon be
passed by the National Assembly to the executive for its assent.
Speaking on projects to be executed by the
federal government in his constituency, Senator Tsauri disclosed that the
federal government has set aside N1 billion for completion of Zobe dam.
Senator Tsauri further said the federal
government would provide other facilities for irrigation activities at Jibia
dam.
