WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2004           Kano SSG Vs Freedom Radio: Court adjourns hearing to Feb 23 By ABDULLAHI YAKUBU A KANO High Court presided over by Justice Audu Aboki has adjourned a N1 billion defamation suit instituted by the Kano�s Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and the Permanent Secretary, Government House against the Kano-based Freedom Radio. According to the judge, adjourning the case became inevitable in view of the inability of the defendants to make any substantive move for out of court settlement. Briefing a cross section of journalists shortly after the proceedings on Monday, the plaintiffs� counsel, Barrister I. N. Ambule said that the defendants failed to oblige their previous position for out of court settlement based on what he described as the unseriousness of the defendants that his clients had insisted on the statement of claim of N1 billion. He said once the defendants approach them for out of court settlement, they would look into such possibilities and take position before the adjourned date. It could be recalled that the defendants being a media outfit, had aired a defamatory story condemning the person of the SSG and others for receiving bribery being misappropriated funds meant for fertilizer procurement abroad without following due process of the law. The court has fixed February 23, 2005 for continuation of hearing.
