National Confab coming —OBASANJO

By Charles Ozoemena
Wednesday, December 08, 2004

ABUJA— AT last President Olusegun Obasanjo has given nod to the convocation of a national conference of all ethnic nationalities in the country with the inauguration of the Committee on Political Reforms Agenda charged with the responsibility of preparing ground for what the president christened a "national dialogue." Governor Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna State heads the eight-man committee.

Inaugurating the body yesterday, President Obasanjo urged the committee to produce a background paper that would guide the proposed broad national committee to avoid it embarking on a "wide goose chase." The committee, which is expected to submit its report on or before December 31, 2004, was also tasked with the responsibility of producing background papers for the national dialogue as well as fashioning out guidelines to determine participants at the "national dialogue."

Other members of the committee include Governor Segun Agagu of Ondo State, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, Prof. Jerry Gana, Prof. Aliu Yahaya, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, Prof Okwudiba Nnoli and Prof. Joy Ogwu

In his address, the President said: "The committee is expected to produce a background paper that will form the basis for dialogue by a broadly composed national body soon to be constituted to produce a sound political reform agenda for Nigeria. To ensure public ownership of the envisaged reform process, the proposed national committee will reflect the various social forces and interests, community interests and political tendencies within the nation."

President Obasanjo said Nigeria needed to take a second look at the nation’s political framework and practices in order to consolidate its democracy, promote good governance and social justice and ensure peace and stability in the country. The committee’s work is again to determine what reforms are necessary to complement government’s reform programme being prosecuted under the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS).
