By Sina Babasola
Wednesday, December 08, 2004

IBADAN— VICE - Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Matters, Senator Abiola Ajimobi yesterday in Ibadan hinted that plans were under way for the constructions of mini refineries in the country as part of measures to solve the multi-facetted problems confronting the downstream sector of the oil industry.

Besides, Senator Ajimobi stressed the need for the immediate removal of immunity clause of President, Vice-President, and state governors in the constitution especially on criminal matters. Ajimobi who featured at the monthly Guest forum programme of the Oyo State Council of Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ), Iyaganku, Ibadan said that the mini refineries would be producing 40, 000 litres daily after completion.

Ajimobi representing Oyo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly said that the Senate Committee on Petroleum Matters was determined more than before to solve fuel scarcity problem in the country. According to him, "we feel that we own Nigerians, that is the whole truth on the situation in the petroleum sector. The present government between 1999 and now have spent N520 million dollars on the repairs and maintenance of the four refineries in the country.

"Before the Obasanjo government, N250 million dollars was spent by the military government to repair the refineries but we are yet to see the impact of these huge money, that is why our committee in the Senate invited all the contractors handling the project".
