Crisis looms over Makanjuola's lost title

By Demola Akinyemi
Wednesday, December 08, 2004

ILORIN—There is an overbearing political tension and a looming bloodshed in Babanloma community, home town of the removed ANPP Senator, Chief Makanjuola Ajadi in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State over the recent striping of his  Asiwaju of Babanloma land title by the monarch, Oba Usman Ailara as  representatives of the community and “Eka-Idale Idagbasoke Ilu Babanloma” yesterday at a press conference in Ilorin described the monarch’s pronouncement as null and void and of no substance whatsoever.

Senator Ajadi, the ANPP senatorial candidate in the last election, it would be recalled was dragged to court by his PDP counterpart in that election, Chief Simon Ajibola, having been declared winner for the second term by INEC. But the litigations  went as far as the Supreme Court which declared the PDP senatorial candidate Chief Simon Ajibola as the winner. He had since resumed at the Senate.  The embattled former Senator,  Chief Mamkanjuola Ajadi was derobed of Asiwaju of Babanloma land by his monarch which is now causing tension in the land.

Oba Usman Ailara in a letter to Chief Ajadi titled “Breach of Article on Appointment and Deposition of Babanloma Chiefs," advised the former Senator to “stop parading yourself as the Asiwaju of Babanloma and also as a member of BDU”

The monarch’s grouse against the embattled former Senator according to the letter is “gross misconduct and disobedience to my order given to you in writing that you should not hold Eka Idale meeting which you openly defied” But at a press conference in Ilorin attended by members of the community, the spokesman for Babanloma and Secretary General of Eka-Idale Idagbasoke of Babanloma Community, Alh. Garuba Olu Olaoye explained that the monarch lack the constitutional powers to derobe the former senator. “Therefore the Oba’s pronouncement on Chief Ajadi’s membership of BDU is null and void and of no substance whatsoever.

"The announcement to the effect that our distinguished Senator, Chief Makanjuola Sulaiman Ajadi is being derobed as the  Asiwaju of Babanloma and its environs and also being suspended  from Babanloma Development Union” is to say the least the most amazing happening since 1905. Therefore the Oba’s pronouncement on Chief Ajadi’s membership of BDU is null and void and of no substance whatsoever” it stressed

The community which noted that if not for the Senator the monarch would have being in jail, added that the “community on its part is solidly behind the distinguished Senator (Chief) Makanjuola Sulaiman Ajadi, who is our own Asiwaju of Babanloma and he will continue to be Chief M.S Ajadi, the first Asiwaju of Babnloma land. That can never be wished away nor can it be ignored.
