WARRI — THE Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) moved, yesterday, against multi-national contractors in the oil and gas sector, asking the Federal Government to stop awarding oil contracts to them except they partner with Nigerians.
NSE president, Mr. Mustapha Bulama who made the call in his welcome address at the opening of the 37th National Engineering Conference, holding in Warri, Delta State, said the Federal Government should have the political will to decree that no contract should be given to foreign companies without the involvement of Nigerians.
He said that it made no sense to award billion dollar contract to a foreign firm which thereafter employs one or two Nigerians as administration officers or clerks.
He blamed the development on lack of political will on the part of government, saying that government must look inwards and have faith in the competence of its people, particularly engineers to execute jobs in the oil industry.
The NSE also yesterday inducted about 18 engineers into its Fellowship. They are the Delta State chairman of PDP, Isaac Sinebe; General Manager (Production) of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Western Division, Maarten Wink; Managing Director, NSE PREMS Limited, a company wholly owned by Nigerian engineers, Chike Morah and Deputy Director with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abuja, Kashim Ali.
Others were a deputy director with the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel, Ugochukwu Ata; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Prof Olufemi Bamiro; the Ataoja of Osogbo land, Michael Dada; Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Dr. Ade Edeki; SPDC’s Christopher Ekpekurede; Chief Programmes Officer of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Oludele Falade; erudite scholar, Abiodun Fajobi; a chief engineer with Unilever Plc, Amaechi Nwakuche, a don at the Enugu State University of Technology, Obasi Nwosu; Olubunmi Obembe; Iyoyabebho Okojie; Emodi Olisaeloka; Olufade Olu and John Omoregie.
