Ghanaian polls: Obasanjo replies Rawlings

By Chesa Chesa

Correspondent, Abuja

Abuja has refuted allegation of Nigeria’s interference in the Ghanaian elections, a charge made by that country’s former President Jerry Rawlings.

Incumbent President John Kufour has what seems an unassailable lead in the results so far released, a situation Rawlings had feared and predicated on Nigeria’s help.

He had accused President Olusegun Obasanjo of sending Nigerian security and electoral personnel to Ghana to help Kufour retain power against the wishes of the electorate.

Presidential spokesperson Oluremi Oyo told reporters in Abuja on Thursday that Rawlings’ allegations are unfounded as Abuja did not deploy any security personnel to the neighbouring West African country.

She said: “It is quite unfortunate that the allegation was made by a former leader of a friendly African country. There is no iota of truth whatsoever in the charge that President Olusegun Obasanjo has anything to do with the Ghanaian elections. The President works hard to ensure that there are no malpractices in election in Nigeria. Why would he want to export anything other than good practices?

“What is also important is that there are eminent Nigerian journalists that are covering the election in Ghana. And their reportage has so far shown that the people of Ghana have respect for our President and our people. And there is no evidence whatsoever of Nigerian soldiers or anyone on the ground there”.

Oyo also spoke on Obasanjo’s state visit to Egypt
