Govt axes Albarka, SpaceWorld, 2 others

FELIX NWANERI

THE hammer fell, beginning yesterday on four domestic airlines which allegedly failed or refused to remit about N66 million revenue to the coffers of the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA).

The airlines’ Air Traffic Control (ATC) clearance have been suspended.

NAMA named the affected airlines as Capital Airlines, Space World Airlines, Easy Link Airlines and Albarka Airlines.

By the action, the four airlines have been effectively grounded as they are to receive no air traffic guidance and could crash, should they fly.

Disclosing these to journalists in Lagos Mr. Bem Gong, said the action was jointly taken by the parastatal and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Mr Gong said the suspension remains until the funds are remitted.

According to him, the money in contention is revenue realised from ticket sales charged on the affected airlines’ respective passengers.

Operational procedure stipulates that five per cent of revenue realised from ticket sales by domestic airlines be remitted into NAMA and NCAA accounts.

The two parastatals, in turn share the fund under an agreed ratio of 30 and 70 per cent for NAMA and NCAA respectively.

Shedding more light on the issue, the NAMA spokesman said the ticket sales charge is passengers’ contribution to services and safety of the aviation industry.

Appealing to the airlines to remit the money immediately Mr Gong warned that the exercise is continuous as NAMA is poised to recover all its debts.

"NAMA is at pains to take the decision, considering the fate of passengers, but there is nothing the agency can do in this situation. The suspension remains as long as the airlines refuse to pay," he maintained.
