Nwankiti for burial Dec. 15

LEADING light
and retired Archbishop of Province II of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican
Communion), the late Dr. Benjamin Nwankiti is to be buried next Wednesday,
December 15, in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Programme for the burial is to be made
public today.
Agreement to bury the reverred cleric in
Owerri instead of Atta in Ikeduru, his home town, was reached between his family
members and the church leadership.
Bishop Nwankiti, who died on Wednesday,
November 24, aged 76 will be interred at the Cathedral of Transfiguration of Our
Lord (CATOL) which serves as the headquarters of Owerri Archdiocese of Anglican
Church.
Diocesan Press Officer, Mr. Emma Onumah
told Daily Champion yesterday that the burial at the church premises was
in liaison with the family.
According to Mr. Onumah, the Diocese is
working out a detailed programme to accord the deceased a befitting burial.
It was reliably gathered that family
members of the late Archbishop had pressed for the burial in their home town,
but later succumbed to pressure from church authorities and other well meaning
prominent personalities who resolved that the deceased will be interred in the
church premises.
Meanwhile, scores of sumpathisers have
continued to troop to the Bishop’s Court, Owerri residence of the late Nwankiti
to commiserate with the wife and children of the deceased.
Also, at the residence of the incumbent
Archbishop of Owerri, Rt. Rev. Cyril Okorocha, yesterday, church members were
seen busy with activities for the burial.

The late Archbishop Nwankiti began his
career in priesthood at St. Andrew’s Church, Obosi near Onitsha, Anambra State,
where he was ordained on December 21, 1952 by Bishop Cecil J. Patterson.
He served the Church of Nigeria with
distinction and rose to become a bishop in 1968 after his overseas education.
In 1996, the late Rev. Nwankiti was
appointed Archbishop of then Province II, a position he held until his
retirement at 70 in 1998.
Even after that, the late Nwankiti
continued to contribute to the growth of the church in various capacities until
his death.
