Nwankiti for burial Dec. 15

EMMA OGU, Owerri

LEADING light and retired Archbishop of Province II of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the late Dr. Benjamin Nwankiti is to be buried next Wednesday, December 15, in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Programme for the burial is to be made public today.

Agreement to bury the reverred cleric in Owerri instead of Atta in Ikeduru, his home town, was reached between his family members and the church leadership.

Bishop Nwankiti, who died on Wednesday, November 24, aged 76 will be interred at the Cathedral of Transfiguration of Our Lord (CATOL) which serves as the headquarters of Owerri Archdiocese of Anglican Church.

Diocesan Press Officer, Mr. Emma Onumah told Daily Champion yesterday that the burial at the church premises was in liaison with the family.

According to Mr. Onumah, the Diocese is working out a detailed programme to accord the deceased a befitting burial.

It was reliably gathered that family members of the late Archbishop had pressed for the burial in their home town, but later succumbed to pressure from church authorities and other well meaning prominent personalities who resolved that the deceased will be interred in the church premises.

Meanwhile, scores of sumpathisers have continued to troop to the Bishop’s Court, Owerri residence of the late Nwankiti to commiserate with the wife and children of the deceased.

Also, at the residence of the incumbent Archbishop of Owerri, Rt. Rev. Cyril Okorocha, yesterday, church members were seen busy with activities for the burial.

Daily Champion which visited the area gathered that the church will release its detailed programme for the burial today.

The late Archbishop Nwankiti began his career in priesthood at St. Andrew’s Church, Obosi near Onitsha, Anambra State, where he was ordained on December 21, 1952 by Bishop Cecil J. Patterson.

He served the Church of Nigeria with distinction and rose to become a bishop in 1968 after his overseas education.

In 1996, the late Rev. Nwankiti was appointed Archbishop of then Province II, a position he held until his retirement at 70 in 1998.

Even after that, the late Nwankiti continued to contribute to the growth of the church in various capacities until his death.
