Last Updated: Saturday, December 11th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Missing ship: Hold commanding officer responsible -witness The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye yesterday testified  before the tribunal probing the missing MT African Pride, saying the commanding officer was responsible for the missing ship and therefore be punished accordingly. Adekeye who testified as a prosecution witness, told the court that in the hierarchy of command in the Navy, the CNS remained at the top most  position, the flag officers at the intermediate level while the Commanding Officers remain at the lowest levels, adding that if a Flag Officer gives a directive to the Commanding Officer and the directive is flouted, the Flag Officer has the option of punishing the Commanding Officer. He said that in the case of the missing ship, the Flag Officer would  have asked the Commanding  Officer to produce the ship within 48 hours or be made to face the music. According to him the Commanding Officer could  escape from such punishment if the Commanding Officer eventually provides a ship within the speculated time. Earlier there was a disagreement between prosecution and defense over the evidence to be given by Adekeye. The prosecution had brought him as a Special witness to give expert evidence on the way a directive be given and taken.
