Yakubu back soon for Pompey
Injured Portsmouth striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu could
return to action sooner than first expected.
Pompey's top-scorer, who notched eight goals in 12
starts before a medial knee ligament strain last month - has targeted the home
Barclays Premiership clash with champions, Arsenal on December 19 for his
comeback, despite being originally ruled out until the new year.
The 22-year-old was back running in training this
week and will step up his rehabilitation over the next seven days.
If the progress continues, the powerful Nigeria
forward will be back for the Christmas programme when his side also face
Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Norwich.
Portsmouth could face a struggle to keep their
striker during the January transfer window - because he has already admitted he
wants to eventually play for a bigger club and has been linked with Chelsea and
Middlesbrough.
Yakubu, rated at £10million, is itching for a
first-team return.
"When you have an injury, it is so boring. It is
just a case of having treatment every day and training a lot," he said.
"But I hope I get better soon, start playing
again and scoring goals. Things are looking good with my progress at the
moment."
Meanwhile, Milan Mandaric, who claims he has 30
applicants for Harry Redknapp's vacant manager's job and has drawn up a
short-list of four, denies reports he is actively trying to sell Amdy Faye.
However, the chairman admits he would let the Senegal
midfielder go for the right price.
Mandaric said: "None of this is at our
instigation.
"An agent has contacted my chief executive
(Peter Storrie) asking if we would be prepared to sell the player and we have
asked to be kept in touch."
Pompey are believed to want a minimum £2.5million for
Faye, who cost £1.5million at the start of last season.
