President Olusegun Obasanjo said yesterday in Abuja that the current socio-economic reforms must be accompanied by political reforms to make maximum impact.
At an audience with members of the committee on the reform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the State House, the President noted that “we can take it now that our economic reform is on course, but there must be the other side of the coin, the political reform if the country is to make full progress.”
On the relevance of the committee, President Obasa-njo stressed that since “government is a product of a party, we must have a party that can produce a good government” adding that “it will be utterly irresponsible if we don’t think of the future so that the successive generation can hold its head high.”
He noted that after two successive elections, it was time for the party to “tarry awhile and do an introspec-tion on how to reposition the party for the next couple of decades and make it the bastion of political stability.”
President Obasanjo who dismissed fears of PDP being too strong, stressed that a “way will be devised to have real democracy within the party and nobody should complain about that.”
He told the committee that “you will be doing our party and Nigeria lot of good if your recommendations can make this party strong, vibrant, disciplined and well-focused.”
President Obasanjo said that the committee’s assig-nment was very important adding that its recommen-dations would be tabled before the National Comm-ittee for Political Dialogue.
The chairman of the 36-member Reform Committee, Alhaji Iro Dan Musa, assured the President that the members would examine all issues in the terms of refer-ence through extensive cons-ultations with the objective of repositioning the party to face the challenges of the future.
The committee which was inaugurated by the PDP National chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, on December 3, has six weeks to examine issues such as party disc-ipline, review of party consti-tution, nominations for elect-ive offices, and funding amo-ng others.
