African WBO plans eight bouts for Xmas eve
The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) African Zone and Incentive Promotions have slated eight boxing bouts including three undercards for Dec. 24 in Benin as part of activities for the launching of the Nigerian version of the “Incentives Warriors of Africa.”
Sola Adeyeye on behalf of Incentive Promotions, said at a news conference yesterday in Lagos that the Ghana version of the Incentive Warriors was launched last year in Accra, with boxers from Ghana, Benin Republic and Nigeria featuring in various boxing bouts.
Adeyeye, who is also the co-ordinator of the tournament said that there were no sponsors yet for the one-day event in Benin, but that the Edo state government had pledged its commitment to make the launching a success.
He said to him, the promoter and the Edo state government through the state commissioner for Sports, Ken Ihensekhien have entered into a written agreement for a successful launching.
The main bout of the night he said is a WBO Africa Middleweight vacant title between Nigerian Sunny King “Hammer” and Sodjinou Philber from the Republic of Benin.
Others he said are WBO African Light Middleweight vacant title between Nigerian Jamiyu Raji and Ghanaian Phillip Koyey, WBO Africa Welterweight mandatory defence bout between current champion, Ghanaian Stephen Okine and Nigerian Ike Obi.
He added that current champion Ben Ankrah of Ghana would take on Nigeria’s Ike Obi for the WBO African Lightweight rematch fight and Savi Justin “Papayato” from Benin Republic, would take on Nigeria’s Sunday Okoli for the WBO Africa Super Featherweight vacant title.
The undercards he said were Isaac Ekpo taking on Razak Gbadebo for the Light Heavyweight, Akeem Segun taking on Yusuf Raji for the Super Featherweight and Jamiu Olabode taking on Nneji Stephen for Lightweight.
He said that all the bouts would be over 12 rounds.
On the purse for the boxers, Adeyeye said that the promoter would augment whatever it has with support from the Edo state government to provide the boxers a reasonable purse.
Mrs. Irene Sunmbo Kuti, WBO vice president, African Affairs called on corporate bodies to help develop boxing in Nigeria.
Trigo Egbegi, the secretary of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) said that the tournament was sanctioned by the board.
