NAMA Accuses Airline Operators of Blackmail
By Ndubuisi Francis, Vivian Ezenwoko and Adeleke Emmanuel, 12.11.2004
A day after four airlines had their operations disrupted by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over non remittance of ticket sales charge (TSC), NAMA has described the reaction of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) that airlines were being asked to pay "overflyers charges" as nothing but blackmail. NAMA said the sanction on the affected airlines has yielded positive results as the affected airlines and other indebted ones which were not grounded on Thursday have started paying, insisting that no amount of blackmail by AON would deter it from recovering the debts owed. NAMA in its reaction through its Head Public Affairs, Mr. Ben Bem Goong stated yesterday that as a legally constituted organisation which has immense respect for the rule of law, it would not run foul of the laws of the land bearing in mind that a court of competent jurisdiction is already adjudicating over the issue of over flyer charges. Over flyer charges, he said, could not have been the issue in question for grounding the airlines as imputed in the AON reaction, saying the association was mixing up issues. Goong said taking the action against the airlines was a painful but unavoidable decision, adding NAMA or NCAA would not take delight in seeing the demise of any airline. According to him, the success and continued existence of the airlines also ensure the existence of the aviation parastatals and added that the more the airlines. the better for the organisations.
