World Bank VP Arrives to Assess Projects

The new World Bank Vice President,ž Africa Re-gion, Mr. Gobind Nankani, would arrive Nigeria on Monday in commencement of a 4-day official visit to assess the bank-assisted development programmes across the country. In a statement by Communications/External Affairs Officer of World Bank, Mr. Tohomdet Obadiah, Bretton Woods institution said Nankani, who replaced Mr. Callisto Madavo October this year, would meet with senior government officials, civil society organisations and the press to exchange ideas on how best the bank could assist Nigeria's development programmes. Nakani would undertake field visits to the World Bank assisted projects in Bauchi, Enugu and Abia States where he would interact with government officials and beneficiaries and the business community. During his visits, he would pay courtesy calls on their governors. Nankani, who would be accompanied by the bank's Country Director, Mr. Hafez Ghanem and other bank staff, is expected to visit Fadama markets, Fadama sites and interact with the Fadama Community Associations in Bauchi State as well as inspect bank assisted Primary Education Schools projects in the state. In Enugu, the bank officials would visit Health Systems Development Projects, while in Abia State the Vice President and his team would visit Community-based Poverty Reduction Project sites as well as Industrial Clusters in Aba. Ghanem, said, "Mr. Nankaniís visit to Nigeria would mark the beginning of a new era of cooperation between Nigeria and the World Bank. An era in which we would work together as partners to support Nigeria's effort to create wealth and reduce poverty. In the coming months, focus would be on infrastructure, education, health and Agriculture." The Vice President would leave Nigeria for Washington on December 18. Nankani, a Ghanaian nationale, joined the Bank in 1976 as a Young Professional. In 1977, he was appointed Economist in the Public Finance Division, Development Economics Department. After a brief leave of absence in 1981 as Economic Adviser to the Vice President of Ghana, he joined the West Africa region in the Office of the Director, Country Programs Department. In 1984, he transferred to Nigeria Division, West Africa Country Programmes Department and in 1986 was promoted to Senior Departmental Economist. He has worked in various sectors and countries in the bank such, Latin America and the Caribbean region, South Asia region to mention but a few. He has been the Country Director for Latin America region and Brazil.
