US, Bayelsa to Partner on Devt
From John Iwori in Yenagoa, 12.11.2004
Governor Diepreye Alam-ieyeseigha of Bayelsa State has said the state government would partner with the United States of America to achieve the overall development of the state. Alamieyeseigha stated this when the Consul–General of American Consulate in Lagos, Mr. Brian Brawne, called on him at the Government House, Yenagoa. Represented by the Secre-tary to the State Government, Dr. Steve Azaika, Alamieye-seigha described United States as one of the most power countries in the world, adding that the state government would work with America to ensure the educational growth and sustainable development of the state. Alameiyeseigha said the state was working in concert with Russia and Ukraine for the manpower development of the state by sending youths on scholarship to study medicine, engineering and agriculture. The governor noted that the state would want to have the kind of relationship with the United States especially in specialised areas in the oil and gas industry. This, according to him, would prepare the youths of the state for the challenges ahead especially the new technologies in the oil industry. He explained that the people of the Niger Delta area were at the forefront of the agitation for true federalism and resource control because they believed that these two issues would bring about the overall development of the country. While describing the Ijaws as generally peace-loving people, the Governor Alamieye-seigha called on the United States to set up a public library and information technology network in the state.
