FG to spend N10bn to achieve health sector goals

The federal government has said that it plans to spend more than N10 billion on the health sector in an effort to hasten the achievement of the millennium development goals.

The Minister of State for Health, Funke Adedoyin, told newsmen at the end of Wednesdays Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that part of the strategy was the adoption of a joint three-tier budget.

Adedoyin said that the federal and state governments as well as donor agencies would be involved in the funding.

She said that government had also initiated moves to improve on funding from the donor agencies, noting that at present the country was among the least of beneficiaries from such donor funds.

The minister said that already government was scaling up its health activities in 14 pilot states where indices indicate that there have been a steady increase on child mortality and HIV/AIDS prevalence.

She listed the states as Imo, Anambra, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Bayelsa, Niger, Kogi, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa, noting that it appeared there have been incidences of cross-transfer of the HIV/AIDS pandemic along border states.

Other issues discussed at the meeting was an approval to the Ministry of Works to purchase 40 asphalt production plants directly from the manufacturers at the cost of N561.3 million to enhance performance of the roads maintenance agency.

The facilities which would be distributed to each of the 36 states and works training institutes in Benin, Abeokuta, Badagry and Kaduna, however, are to be run and maintained by the private sector.
