FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2004           Jigawa rolls out 100,000 GSM lines The Jigawa state-owned Galaxy Communication and Information Company is set to launch mobile telephone services with 100,000 lines. Gov. Saminu Turaki said yesterday in Dutse that the 100,000 wireless telephone lines were available for sale to subscribers in Jigawa and neighbouring states. According to him, ``the company aims to provide efficient services at lower rates to facilitate access to improved communication services in rural communities. ``This would enable us to compete with major GSM service providers who charge higher terrifs,'' the governor stressed. Turaki did not give details of the rates to be charged by the company, but said additional lines would soon be made available for sale after the initial 100,000 lines. ``Already, a licence has been obtained from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enhance its operations,'' he said. The NCC, he added, had issued a serial number for the telephone system, while interconnectivity between the company and Nitel was being considered. Galaxy Communication Company was incorporated in 2001 to provide Internet services, telephony, television and radio broadcasting services in Jigawa.
